Description
An oil on canvas portrait of Suzanne-Henriette de Lorraine, Duchess of Mantua (1686-1710) seated with a small dog on her lap and viewed at three-quarter length against a dramatically lit landscape (French, 18th century). Suzanne Henriquette de Lorraine married Ferdinando Carlo Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua (1652-1708) in 1706. The Duchess is portrayed seated in a gilt Louis XIV armchair, her right arm resting on the ermine lining of an enfolding blue velvet wrap draped over a gilt baroque console table. In the left background, a marble column emerges from a drum, level with the console, and is shrouded with a large red fabric drapery that is parted in the right rear background to reveal a landscape. The subject's white dress is richly wrought with metallic brocade and clasps. She wears a corsage in the ruffled lace of her decollete and a lily spray in her upswept hair.
