Description
A TWENTY-FIVE PIECE LOUIS XIV STYLE GILT BRONZE DINING SET (French, c. 1890) from the workshop of Jules Allard and Sons, custom made for the Dining Room at Marble House. The suite includes two armchairs (.1-.2), twenty side chairs (.3-.22), and three stools (.23-.25). The pieces are covered in their original upholstery of red silk, voided cut velvet with gold lame overlay. The textile is after a design by Roux c. 1860 in the archives of Prelle & Cie. The bronze dore pieces stand on square tapered legs connected by shaped cross stretchers. This suite represents a rare example of bronze furniture in the US.
