circa 1869-1870

An architectural rendering of "Le Chalet" (also called "Rest Mere," built between 1869-1870), a house on Bellevue Avenue designed by Richard Morris Hunt. Illustration was most likely executed by Hunt; appears to be drawn in pencil and watercolor/wash. House is depicted at center surrounded by a drive and a landscaped lawn with trees and shrubs. Exterior is half-timbered, and includes elaborate carving along balcony railings. Roof is topped with cresting and a chimney. A note enclosed with the drawing reads as follows: " 'Le Chalet' The residence of the late Dr James Thevigny Gibert of New York and Paris, who made his summer home in Newport and built this residence on Bellevue Avenue during the 1880s [incorrect]. The House was originally painted a canary yellow with black trim and xross [sic] beams, and was designed by the well known architect, Richard Morris Hunt in the manner of a Swiss country home, [sic] The house is still standing. Presented to the Newport Historical Association by Doctor Gibert's grandson Reginald T. Townsend who with his twin brother Audinet was born there".
