A five-shilling banknote from Massachusetts, dating to 1782. Printed text reads: "MASSACHUSETTS STATE/FIVE SHILLINGS/and six-pence./shall be paid to the Bearer/of this Bill by/the 1st Day of/Decemr. 1782/ agreable to an/Act of the Genl Court of said/State." Note is signed and numbered by hand. A "rising" sun is also printed on the note at right.
