Description
An American Federal mahogany Pembroke table (Newport, 1798) made by Robert Lawton. The rectangular top has short drop leaves above a skirt with a single working drawer, supported on square tapering legs. One side bears a paper label inscribed in black "Robert Lawton, Jr., cabinet-maker, carries on said business in its various branches in Spring St., also has on hand, the new-invented Spring, Crimping, Press & Crimping Boards with several kinds of portable writing desks. No. 33 - Newport, 4 of 10 Mon. 1798." Together with a small paper label inscribed in pencil, "Mrs. Mary B. Safford."
