Description
A set of five American Chippendale mahogany side chairs (Newport, 1760-1770) attributed to Thomas Townsend (American, 1742-1827). The shaped crest rail is accented with a central fan carving incised with cross-hatching above an open back with a pierced and scrolled splat. It is supported on four legs - the two front legs are accented on two sides with stop fluting, while the back legs are splayed at the bottom. They have H-shape stretchers together with a single back stretcher and the slip seat is upholstered in a later peach colored silk damask.
