Description
A PAIR OF FRENCH BRONZE TORCHIERES (French, c. 1875) cast by Ferdinand Barbedienne (French, 1810-1892) from a model by Emile Guillemin (French, 1841-1907). Installed in the main stairwell of Chateau-sur-Mer the torchieres are in the form of Japanese women. The two figures wear kimonos and stand in a relaxed position, (.1) holds a flowering cherry branch and (.2) holds a fan indicating that she is a geisha, both hold up flowering plum branches with three lights on each. These candelabra are signed by the French foundry F. Barbedienne and were bought at either the Paris Universal Exposition (Trocadero) in 1878 or the Paris Universal Exposition (Eiffel Tower) in 1889. They both have brown patination with gilt highlights and are signed Emile Guillemin.
