A Pair of Louis XVI-style Urns

c. 1900

A pair of monumental Louis XVI style urns (French, c. 1900) by Jules Allard & Sons of Paris. Each has a pink marble urn with a bronze lid and a pineapple finial above a flaring rim. The rim is accented with an egg and dart band border. On the sides are acanthus-clad bronze handles. Surrounding the urn are The Three Graces joined by a garland of flowers. On the front and back sides of the urn is an ormolu sunburst with a face flanked by large laurel branches, inspired by the solar bust vase at the Cent Marches of Versailles. The urn is raised on a circular pink marble socle supported on a square base that is inscribed 'J. ALLARD ET SES FILS'. The entire urn and base are raised on a green molded octagonal plinth of Verdi antique marble. All four of the sides have ormolu laurel garlands tied at the top with ribbon and the four corner sides feature ormolu bellflowers.
