Description
BROWN ON IVORY TRANSFER-PRINTED EARTHENWARE PLATTER (English, 1881) with the "Melbourne" brown pattern mark: "Melbourne G & W (1799) late Mayer English Registered, dated 8/ 27/1881." Also impressed: 'Ivory' and '4/87'. Other marks illegible. Depicting a South Seas paradise with a counterpoint patchwork at the base of a Japonesque motif grounds setting off "mons" and an owl in moonlight vignette. On the sea sails a Western boat past bamboo fronds. It is rectangular in shape. The Melbourne pattern was patented August 27, 1881 by Gildea & Walker and stands out in the world of Japonesque assymetrical patterns. Gildea & Walker were an active Staffordshire partnership at the Dale Hall works between 1881 and 1885.
