"Trolling for Mermaids"

An oil on Swedish masonite panel painting entitled “Trolling for Mermaids” (American, c. 1965) by New England folk artist Martha Cahoon (America, 1905-1999). The scene depicts two castaway sailors fishing on a beach with three mermaids underwater below in the foreground. There is a wreck of a sailing ship next to an island on the horizon line in the background. The signature at lower right reads: "Martha Cahoon."
