A NEWPORT PENCIL SKETCH BY J.P. NEWELL SHOWING A SHINGLED WINDMILL on a hill with a view of the inner harbor of Newport. A romanticized view of land later to be occupied by the Powel estate. Label on reverse reads: "This old windmill stood on my house lot and was moved off when the place was bought. This sketch was made by Newell from an old print. 1860 'W.P. Powel'." According to the Newport Mercury March 19, 1836 "windmill ... must be moved off the lot on or before March 25th."
