Description
FOUR JEUX D'ENFANTS STATUARY GROUPINGS (French, 19th century) sculpted from white marble by the studios of Jules Allard et ses Fils after 18th century French originals. The originals were possibly by Jean-Joseph Vinache (French 1696-1754) and finished by Nicholas-Francois Gillet (French, 1696-1754). The originals could have also been after the Edme Bouchardon (French, 1698-1762) c. 1740 groups in terra cotta of "Amours Playing." The Bouchardon models, very closely related to the Berwind groups, are likely inspired by compositions by the Flemish Renaissance sculptor Francois Duquesnoy (1594-1643) whose work Bouchardon is known to have admired and drawn for his own inspiration.
