Title
L'abondance (Abundance)
Date
c. 1900
Description
A white marble sculpture entitled “L’abondance” (“Abundance”) (French, c. 1900) from the studio of Jules Allard and Sons after a 1758 century sculpture by Lambert-Sigibert Adam (French, 1700-1759), also known as Adam the Elder. Representing the divine personification of prosperity, the nude female sculpture carries an overflowing cornucopia with fruit spilling out around the base. The traits of the original were erroneously said in the nineteenth century to be modeled after Madame de Pompadour, as the original marble was at Chateau de Menars, the former Loire Valley Chateau of Madame de Pompadour and later her brother the Marquis de Marigny.
