L'aurore (Aurora)

A white marble sculpture of L’aurore (Aurora) (French, c. 1900) from the studio of Jules Allard et ses Fils depicting a nude, winged goddess riding a cloud, facing left and carrying a flaming torch. In her outstretched hand and strewn around her feet are several roses. She can be found on the upper terrace of The Elms grounds. This work by Allard is a 19th century French copy after the original by Jean-Joseph Vinache, (French, 1696-1754) executed in 1750. In the 19th century her features were falsely said to be modeled after Madame de Pompadour, the mistress of King Louis XV. The original marble statue was on the grounds of the Chateau de Menars, the former Loire Valley chateau of Madame de Pompadour and her brother, the Marquis de Marigny.
