Description
A series of four allegorical sculpture busts representing the four seasons (French, c. 1900) by the studios of Jules Allard et ses Fils, based after late 17th sculptures attributed to Pierre Legros the Elder (French, 1629-1714) from the Chateau de Saint-Cloud, now in the collection of the Louvre. The sculpture busts are original to The Elms and were originally displayed along the First Floor Gallery, they were moved outdoors c. 1915 following the completion of the Grande Allée.
.1= “Le Printemps” (“Spring”) white marble allegorical sculpture bust (French, c. 1900) by the studios of Jules Allard et ses Fils. “Le Printemps” is depicted as a classically draped female torso with her hair adorned with a floral garland. The bust is raised on a tall pedestal base carved in low relief with budding and blooming floral branches above a concave scallop shell decoration.
.2 = “L’Automne” (“Autumn”) white marble allegorical sculpture bust (French, c. 1900) by the studios of Jules Allard et ses Fils. “L’Automne” is depicted as a figure with grape clusters adorning their hair and a lion wrap around their shoulders. The bust is raised on a tall pedestal base caved in low relief with grape vines above a concave scallop shell decoration.
.3 = “L’Été” (“Summer”) white marble allegorical sculpture bust (French, c. 1900) by the studios of Jules Allard et ses Fils. “L’Été” is depicted as a classically draped female figure, with stalks of wheat braided into her hair. The bust is raised on a tall pedestal base carved in low relief with stalks of wheat above a concave shell decoration.
.4 = “L’Hiver” (“Winter”) white marble allegorical sculpture bust (French, c. 1900) by the studios of Jules Allard et ses Fils. “L’Hiver” is depicted as a bearded, older man, shrouded in a fur lined cloak. The bust is raised on tall pedestal base carved in low relief with water reeds above a concave scallop shell decoration.
