Date
c. 1766
Description
A GILT BRONZE, STEEL, AND MARBLE CONSOLE TABLE (French, c. 1766) attributed to Pierre Deumier (French, active 1760s) after a design by Jean-Louis Prieur (French, active 1765-1785) and Victor Louis (French, 1731-1807). The serpentine marble top is raised on a flower-head guilloche frieze centered with a gilt bronze shield bearing three fleur-de-lis, gilt bronze garlands hang below. Curling bronze acanthus leaves climb up the pierced side supports. The stretcher connecting the legs is centered with a classical shaped urn topped with a pinecone finial and surrounded by garlands. The console table stands on a modern platform base.
The original design by Louis was intended for a model commissioned for the Royal Palace of Warsaw. After the set was realized, additional copies were made for the Paris market.
