Description
TWO GILT BRONZE GAS CHANDELIERS BY CORNELIUS AND COMPANY (American, 19th century) installed in the Ballroom of Chateau-sur-Mer. Each has eight lights, converted from gas to electricity. They were made in the French rococo style with eight scrolling foliate arms on each, supporting opaque white glass globes with some of the replacements decorated with etching. On the central support four herm-like figures seem to hold each set of arms from below. Scrolling, foliage and flowers decorate the supports above the arms. Cornelius and Company later became Cornelius and Baker of Philadelphia. The chandeliers were exhibited by the firm at the 1851 Crystal Palace Exhibition in London.
