Description
A CHINOISERIE SECRETARY DESK (English, early 18th century) in the William and Mary style composed of japanned pine in imitation of Asian lacquerwork. The secretary is decorated with gilt chinoiserie designs of figures and animals in a landscape setting. The upper section is topped with angular arched twin pediments with urn finials over two conforming contoured doors enclosing a fitted drawer interior. There are two candle slides above the slanted fall front writing plateau of the lower section. When open this section reveals small drawers and pigeonholes. Below the slant front are two half and two long drawers. The secretary stands on four bracket feet and is mounted with period brass hardware and drop drawer pulls.
