Description
A MAHOGANY OR TEAK GAMESBOX (American, 19th century) used by William K. Vanderbilt, Jr., Harold S. Vanderbilt, and their paid companion, William Gilmour. The rectangular box is fitted with brass & silver mounts and features a lift-top and a drop-front. The front panel has an ornate key escutcheon and two raised concentric bands that travel around sides. The lid is decorated with four pierced corner bracket mounts and one central ornate cartouche mount. It opens to reveal four telescoping side trays containing carved wood chess men, cups and slate score boards. Built into lid recess is a reversible gaming board. At the bottom of chest, there are four small removable compartments for wooden checker pieces and a single long compartment for ivory faced dominoes.
