Description
A LOUIS XV MARQUETRY COMMODE (French, 18th century) attributed to the workshop of Jean-François Oeben. The serpentine front commode has a reddish brown marble top with a molded edge, the body is made up of two central drawers, and it stands on four slightly curved legs with fitted gilt-bronze sabots. The front and side panels are veneered in floral marquetry and decorative strap work. The front corners are ornamented with ormolu mounts of a foliate design with central cartouches. The drawers have foliate shaped ormolu pulls and keyholes.
Jean-François Oeben (1721-1763) was a German-born royal cabinet maker working in France under the reign of Louis XV. Known for his masterful floral marquetry Oeben severed aristocratic clients such as Madame de Pompadour, the mistress of Louis XV.
