Description
"AN AMERICAN CHIPPENDALE MAHOGANY GATE-LEG CARD TABLE (Newport, c. 1780) attributed to John Townsend (1732-1809). The table has a rectangular top with a hinged leaf supported by a swing-out gate leg. The table has a single drawer with a contemporary brass knob handle, and is balanced on the opposing side with a false drawer having an identical knob handle. Three sides of the table have a small band of cross-hatching decoration along the apron. Pierced fretwork brackets are on either side of the four straight square legs, which are decorated on two sides with stop-fluting.
