UNTITLED ARCHITECTURAL VIEW (American, date 1870) by David Maitland Armstrong (American, 1836-1918). The oil on paper scene shows a barrel vaulted Roman ruin in the Roman Campagna, a favorite subject of the artist. The ruin appears to be the Columbarium of Largo Preneste, outside of Rome along the Via Prenestina. An aqueduct can be seen in the background on the right. It is signed and dated by the artist on the bottom left corner "DM Armstrong / Rome - 1870."
