Description
A BRONZE SCULPTURE OF A HORSE DRAWN CHARIOT (French, c. 1880) on a footed white marble base. The chariot is in the form of an acanthus leaf, the back of which is surmounted by a putto holding a garland, the chariot is drawn by a horse, the reins of which are held by a putto also holding a torch. The figures of the putti and horse are parcel-gilt. The chariot sits on four ornate burnished bronze wheels, the back two of which have a lion’s face/mask at center. Baroque in style, in the manner of models attributed to the Roman carver Ludovico Gimignani (1643-1697).
