Description
A PAIR OF COVERED SWEETMEAT BASKETS (English, c. 1820) composed of silver plate, glass, and topped with ivory pineapple shaped finials, manufactured in Sheffield, England. The bodies of the urn shaped forms have wire sides with cobalt blue glass liners, and lion mask ring handles decorate the sides. The baskets stand on square bases with four shaped feet. The term "sweetmeat" refers to small bite-sized confections such as candied fruit and sugared nuts. Decorative baskets to hold these treats could be found on the well laid out dessert tables of the 18th and 19th centuries.
