A PAIR OF PASTILLE BURNERS (Chinese, 19th century) constructed out of glazed porcelain in the form of basketwork cages topped with tassel bows, which lift off to reveal figures of a rooster, hen, and chick. A compartment in the base forms the pastille burner. The base sits on three curved feet. Pastille burners were used to burn small pellets of solid perfume to remove unpleasant odors.
