Description
A Chippendale revival-style blanket chest (American, late 19th century) attributed to George E. Vernon & Co., Newport. The chest has a large, central thirteen-lobe carved shell motif on the front with a surrounding foliate design. There are three drawers along the bottom of the piece, two large drawers flanking a central smaller drawer, each with a brass handle. Each side of the chest also has a brass handle. An egg and dart motif decorates the lower border of the chest. The chest stands on four cabriole legs, decorated with carved shell motifs and ending in ball and claw feet. Originally from Malbone, the Morris’s estate in Newport, RI.
