Description
A SET OF THIRTY OIL ON PLATINUM LEAF MYTHOLOGICAL PANELS (French, c. 1892) from the studios of Jules Allard et ses Fils, Pairs, installed on the walls of the Morning Room of The Breakers. Panels depicting eight of the nine muses decorate four corners of the room, with two in each corner. Those depicted are: Clio, Euterpe, Thalia, Melpomene, Terpsichore, Erato, Calliope, and Uraine (omitting Polyhmnia). The muses are depicted wearing robes and engaged in activates associated with their attributes. They stand above their name plates and are surrounded by painted delicate curving foliate decoration. Above the panels depicting the muses are shorter panels with profiles of women at center. These in turn are surrounded by six pairs of narrower panels, and two over door panels with urns at center.
