Description
A pair of marble roundels (American, 1891) by Karl Theodore Francis Bitter (American, 1867-1915) framed by wreaths and held by gilt female figures of "Fame", installed above the windows in the main stair landing at Marble House. The roundel on the left (PSNC.14505.1) features a bas relief profile of Richard Morris Hunt (American, 1827-1895), the architect of Marble House, looking right and reads "AD 1891 / RICH MORRIS HUNT." The roundel on the right (PSNC.14505.2) features a bas relief profile of Jules Hardouin Mansart (French, 1646-1708), the architect behind much of Versailles, looking to the left and reads "JH MANSART."
