Title
A Large Neo Boulle Wall Cabinet or "Meubles D'appui"
Date
c. 1890
Description
A LARGE NEO BOULLE WALL CABINET OR "MEUBLES D'APPUI" (French, c. 1890) with marquetry, bronze dore, and brass arabesque decoration, from the workshops of Jules Allard et ses Fils, Paris. Two doors flank the central cabinet enclosing shelves. The design of this cabinet is after a 17th century original by André-Charles Boulle (French, 1642-1732) presently in the English Royal Collections and displayed in the grand corridor at Windsor Castle.
This cabinet follows the same general inlay pattern as the Windsor model but is increased in height and embellished with brass arabesque elements and mounts. The English models were reworked in the 19th century with the addition of an ebonized and gilt-bronze mounted plinth by Mssrs. Morel and Seddon. A similarly treated neo-Boulle cabinet of approximately the same date (c. 1890), and furnished by Allard, was in the Ogden Mills house in New York (lot 360, Ogden L. Mills Sale).
