Description
"DOINGS OF THE BELLS OF HELL" (American, 20th century) a framed caricature drawing by George Annand (American, 1890-1980). The pen and ink watercolor depicts Harold S. Vanderbilt and his crew aboard the Enterprise, when the main mast has just snapped. The Enterprise, captained by Vanderbilt, won the 1930 America’s Cup race against the Shamrock V. Vanderbilt devised a duralumin mast, the first of its kind, as well as a wide boom with horizontal slides to obtain a better curve for the mainsail and mechanical devices to handle more of the running rigging below deck than ever before. Four smaller cartoon scenes appear at the four corners.
