Description
"RANGER" (American, dated 1938), an oil on board painting by Edward Clark (American). Skippered by Harold S. Vanderbilt, the Ranger successfully beat the challenging Endeavour II of Great Britain in the 1937 America’s Cup race. Vanderbilt’s win with Ranger made him only the second person ever to successfully defend the cup three times. In the painting the Ranger is depicted at center sailing on blue waves, with crew about the deck, and a blue sky with clouds in the background. Prior to this painting being donated to the Preservation Society it hung in the library of Harold S. Vanderbilt’s New York apartment. The canvas is signed and dated by the artist on the bottom right corner.
