VENUS SURPRISE PAR L’AMOUR or VENUS SURPRISED BY LOVE (French, 18th century) sanguine washed engraving by Louis Marin Bonnet (French, 1736-1793) after Francois Boucher (French, 1703-1770). The engraving depicts a reclining Venus surprised by Cupid peeking out from behind a partially drawn bed hanging. The work is dedicated to Mr. Mesnard de Chouzy, Councilman, accountant to the King's household, and Commander in the Royal Order of St. Lazare. The work is housed in a 19th century knotted bow crested gilt-wood frame with French matte.
