Object Type

Description
A colored engraving entitled "L’Enlevement Nocturne" (or "The Evening Abduction") (French, c.1780) by Nicolas Ponce (French, 1746-1831) after a painting of the same name by Pierre-Antoine Baudouin (French, 1723-1769). The engraving depicts a nighttime scene with figures in 18th century costume. A ladder is propped against a high stone wall, at the top a lady’s maid descends, while at the bottom a young man helps his aristocratically dressed lover off to an awaiting carriage with liveried footmen. The engraving is housed in an elaborate gilt-wood frame that is accented along the top with a bow and floral garlands.
Written along the bottom of the engraving above the title is "Peint a Gouape par A. Boudouin - Peintre du Roi", and, to the right "Grave par Nicolas Ponce", below is "Dedie a Monsieur Basin Graveur" flanking an oval cartouche bearing the monogram 'JB' and in script to the left "A Paris chez l'Auteur, Graveur ordinaire du Cabinet de Mgr. Comte d'Artois, de l'Academie Royale des Sciences, Belles Lettres et Arts de Rouen, & C Rue Ste. Hyacinthe No. 19." and to the right "Par son Ami et Serviteur Ponce."
