A LOUIS XV STYLE MINIATURE BERGERE (French, c. 1905) from the studio of Jules Allard et ses Fils, the beech frame is painted grey and the seat, back, sides, and armrests are upholstered in blue gray floral damask. The shaped crest-rail is carved along the top with two flowers and trailing petals, this motif is repeated on the curved seat rail. The chair stands on four cabriole legs, the front two have flowers carved at the knees.
According to tradition, this chair was custom made by the Allard family for Hippodale, the beloved Papillion breed dog of clients Mrs. Elizabeth Drexel Dahlgren Lehr and her husband Harry S. Lehr for use in their Paris residence. Hippodale can be found clutched in Mrs. Lehr’s arm in her 1905 full-length portrait by Giovanni Boldini (PSNC.2500) and again in a c. 1910 solo portrait by Mariette Leslie Cotton (PSNC.14388).
