Description
A DIRECTOIRE PROVINCIAL FRUITWOOD PETITE COMMODE (French, 18th century) with a red breche marble top, marquetry side panels, and a panel of false book bindings beneath the central drawer. The marble top is surrounded by a pierced brass gallery on three sides. The corners of the body are incised with shallow fluted channels. Included among the titles of the false books are such well known works as "Terence Comédies", "Baude Poésies", "Virgil L’Énéide", and "Descartes Oeuvres." The commode stands on four cylindrical legs which end in brass capped feet.
