Description
A pair of boar’s head vases (French, 19th century) composed of porcelain decorated with green enamel and gilding. The pair of Vieux Paris porcelain vases were done after a model by Pierre Gouthière (French, 1732-1813). The vases are in the form of rhyton (animal-headed drinking vessels) that terminate in a gilt boar’s head, the body of the vessel is decorated with a gilt fruit swag, the whole sits on an oval gilt base. Metal (zinc) inserts line the opening of the vases. Rhyton were used for drinking and pouring offerings in ancient times.
