Description
A LOUIS XIV STYLE CARVED GILTWOOD SETTEE (French, late 19th century) from the workshop of Jules Allard and Sons. The arched rectangular padded back has a mascaron within a sunburst along the top center of the carved gilt-wood frame. The surrounding frame is carved with a stylized floral motif. Curved armrests connect to S-scroll supports carved with acanthus leaves. The long padded seat is raised on eight tapered legs carved with foliage, bellflowers, and gadrooned feet. The legs are joined by an elaborate network of stretchers carved with leaf and shell motifs. The back and seat are upholstered with reworked Aubusson tapestry of a later date (likely 18th century). The scene on the back depicts a dolphin within a central cartouche flanked by fruit and flowers.
