Description
“Commodore’s Cup Trophy for First Division Schooners” (American, 1914) produced by the silversmith Arthur J. Stone (American, 1847-1938) and his leading craftsman Herbert A. Taylor (American, 18892-1942). This trophy was awarded to Harold Stirling Vanderbilt by the Eastern Yacht Club, Marblehead, MA, in 1914. The trophy is in punch bowl form and stands on a tapered circular base. A bas relief inscription along the top rim reads "COMMODORE'S CUP EASTERN YACHT CLUB CRUISE 1914 FOR FIRST DIVISION SCHOONERS." Below this are oval ocean scenes of the Four Winds blowing spray-capped waves across the surface of the water, tiny beads of gold represent the water’s spray. The hand-hammering seen across the surface is indicative of the Arts & Crafts movement. The trophy is marked on the underside with the mark of Stone’s workshop’s leading craftsman Herbert A. Taylor (American, 1892-1942). Stone allowed his designers to sign the pieces they worked on as a celebration of the individually of each maker.
