Title
A George III Silver Beaker
Date
1791
Description
A George III silver beaker (English, 1791) possibly by the silversmith duo Peter and Ann Bateman with an over struck mark by Thomas Ollivant. The beaker has smooth sides and a slightly tapered body. It is marked with a griffin crest on one side, and has a gold wash interior. The slightly concave base is struck with four silver hallmarks around a central maker’s mark indicating that it is sterling, was produced in the city of London, in 1791, under the rule of George III. At center is a rectangular under mark with what appears to be the letters "PB / AB" for Peter Bateman (English, active 1790-1815) and Ann Bateman (English, active 1791-1805). This mark has been over-struck by "TO" for Thomas Ollivant, a retailer in Manchester who registered his own mark with the London Assay Office in 1789, but is believed to not have produced his own silver and instead purchased silver stock which he over-stamped with his name and then sold.
