Description
A silver George II kettle on stand (London, 1741) with its original burner, made by John Swift (British, active from 1728). The globular kettle has a hinged lid and scroll mounted spout and handle. The body and lid are decorated with a rocaillerie border, and the spout and handle are molded with acanthus leaves at the base. The hinged cover has an ivory finial. The front of the kettle is decorated with the Malbone family coat of arms, the back is marked with the initials "L.M.H" and "G.M.B." The kettle is hinged on a circular tripod base made up of three scrolled legs. The base is accented with an apron of pierced fretwork disguising the burner. A chain is attached to the apron and plug to prevent spilling. The underside of the kettle and burner are marked with four hallmarks, identifying it as sterling, produced in the city of London, in 1741, by John Swift.
