Description
A pewter plate (American, c. 1790) made by David Melville (1755-1793) of Newport, RI. The plate is impressed on the reverse with David Melville’s four square hallmarks, the first contains his initials, the second an anchor with four stars, the third contains a hanging sheep, and the fourth a rosette. Above the hallmarks is Melville’s touch mark which reads "MADE IN NEWPORT / BY D : MELVILLE" with a five-lobed shell form above a field of thirteen stars.
