Description
A pewter porringer (American. c. 1795) made by either David or Thomas Melville of Newport, RI. The porringer has a "Newport" type solid handle and rayed bracket. The handle is impressed with a rare mark reading "N ENGLAND" with a touch mark below which reads "MADE IN NEWPORT / BY : MELVILLE" with a five-lobed shell form above a field of thirteen stars. On the handle bracket are the raised letters "TM."
