Description
A pewter basin (American, c. 1800) made by either Thomas Melville (The Elder) or Thomas Melville (The Younger) of Newport, RI. The circular basin is impressed at center with a shield shaped mark bearing the letters "TM."
The Melville family of pewterers – David Melville (1755-1793), his brothers Thomas (1764-1796) and Samuel (active 1793-1800), and his sons, Thomas (active 1796-1824) and Andrew- worked in Newport after the American Revolution.
