Portrait of George Coyte, Esq.

"Portrait of George Coyte, Esq." (English, c. 1760) by Francis Cotes (English, 1726-1770). The subject is depicted at half length, facing right, wearing a turquoise coat with elaborate gold buttons over a pearl grey satin waistcoat also with gold buttons, a high collar, white shirt and a lace jabot. His short powdered white wig terminates in side rolls. The background is painted in deep tones of gold. The canvas is unsigned and housed in a later rococo gesso and gilt carved wood frame. Along the bottom center of the frame is a small metal plaque inscribed in black "GEORGE COYTE, ESQ. / FRANCOS COTES."
