Description
An oil on canvas painting entitled "Portrait of a Gentleman" (English, c. 1700), by an unknown artist. The sitter is depicted at three-quarter length, standing and facing right. He wears a long curly white powdered wig, a dark blue silk jacket with silver buttons, a high collar white silk shirt with lace cuffs, a white silk jabot, and a gilt sword just below the waist. His left hand points into the distance while his right rests on a rock. The background depicts a lush, possibly Caribbean, landscape. A large cliff rises on the left and trees peak out on the right below a blue cloud-swept sky. The canvas is unsigned and housed in a later gilt accented wood frame with panels of rocaille decoration.
