Description
A printed and written appointment on parchment bearing the seal of the colony of Rhode Island, it is signed by Governor Joseph Wanton (1705-1780) and dated May 7, 1774. The appointment announces Jonathan Rogers as a Justice of the Peace in the town of Newport. The attached seal in the upper left corner is embossed with the RI coat of arms, an anchor sits within a shield, flanked on either side by a flowering vine and surmounted by the word "HOPE" in block letters. Wanton’s signature is on the lower right corner. The document is housed in a black wood frame.
Gov. Wanton’s eldest son, Joseph Wanton Jr. (1730-1780) was the second owner of Hunter House and would serve as the Deputy Governor of RI.
