Description
An engraved portrait entitled "John Hunter" (English, dated 1788) by William Sharp (English, 1749-1824) after a painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds (English, 1723-1792). The subject, Dr. John Hunter (English, 1728-1793), is depicted at three-quarter length, seated in an armchair and facing forward. He wears a black waistcoat, and knickers with jeweled clasps. He holds a feather quill in his right hand and rests his chin on this bent left arm. His thinning white hair is curled at the sides. The elbow of his left arm rests on a table draped with fabric and covered with anatomical books, as well as a plant below a glass dome. In the background on the right the viewer can glimpse the hanging feet of a skeleton and a specimen jar in a recessed alcove. Beneath the image on the bottom left the print is inscribed "Sir Joshua Reynolds pinxt.", opposite on the right it is inscribed "Willm. Sharp sculpt." Beneath the title at center it is inscribed "London. Published 1st Jany. 1788, by Wm. Sharp, No. 8, Charles Street, Midd x. Hospital: B.B. Evans, corner of the Old Jewry, Cheapside, & W. Skelton, No. 23 Hay Market." The print is housed in a black painted frame with gilt bead accents.
