Description
A mezzotint portrait entitled "Jacobus Christianus Schaeffer" (German, dated 1774) engraved by John Elias Haid (German, 1736-1809), after a painting by Gottfried Valentin Mansinger (German, 1737-1817). The subject, scientist Jacob Christian Schäffer (German, 1718-1790), is depicted at bust length in an oval surround. He wears a white powdered wig, a large white ruffled collar, and a black robe. Beneath the oval surround is a square pedestal inscribed with the title and Schäffer’s credentials, it reads "Theologie Doctor / ac / Naturae Ferutator Folerti Simus." Beneath the image on the bottom left the mezzotint is inscribed "Godf. Val. Mansinger pinx. 1774.", opposite on the bottom right it is inscribed "J. E. Haid, Sculp. A.V. 1774." The print is housed in a black painted wood frame accented with an inner beadwork border.
