Description
A faience tankard (German, Nuremberg, c. 1760) painted by Georg Friedrich Kordenbusch (German, d. 1763). The body is of cylindrical form with a strap handle, hinged pewter cover and foot rim. The body and handle are painted in delicate pale tones of blue, manganese, green and yellow against a white ground. The front is painted with a central bouquet of roses, jonquils, and morning glory (convolvulus) tied with a ribbon. A carnation and blooming pink conical flower flank the sides along with scattered leaves and insects. The cover is inscribed at center with the letters "A S." The tankard is signed "NB" over "K" in manganese.
