Description
A pewter plate (American, c. 1790) made by David Melville (1755-1793) of Newport, RI. The circular plate has a flat rim. The reverse is impressed with two of David Melville’s touch marks, they read "MADE IN NEWPORT / BY D : MELVILLE" above a five-lobed shell form above a field of thirteen stars. Impressed between the two hallmarks is the letter "A." Below this are three of Melville’s four square hallmarks, the first contains his initials, the second an anchor with four stars, the third contains a hanging sheep, next to this the side of a fourth mark can be faintly seen.
